Quileute (pronounced Quill-yoot) legends are stories passed down from the Quileute tribe of American Indian. The Quileute myths are complete with characters that conjure up spectral images to the one who reads or hears these stories. Of the characters belonging to the Quileute myths, there is Q’waiti, Raven, Thunderbird, and Dask’ija.

In the Twilight book series, written by Stephenie Meyer, she writes of a Quileute myth of The Cold Ones. The Cold Ones are mythical vampires made up by the author. The Cold Ones are not actually part of Quileute Legends. The author of Twilight incorporates all true Quileute legends in her story, except for the part she made up about the vampires, called The Cold Ones.

As told in Quileute folklore, the Quileute Indians descended from wolves. Quileute legends suggest that a mythical being known to have 3 interchangeable titles as The Trickster, The Transformer, and The Changer. Quileute myths proclaim that the two sided mythical character known as Dokibatt and K’wa’iti was responsible for creating the first ever person of the Quileute tribe. This creation story takes on a life of its own. In the beginning there were 6 tribal societies that represented the elk hunter, the whale hunter, the fisherman, the weather predictor, and the medicine man. The medicine man honored the creator with the wolf dance.

In the Twilight book series: Breaking Dawn, Twilight, New Moon, and Eclipse the author is true to Quileute folklore, with the exception to the inclusion of the vampires called The Cold Ones. Since the writing of the book, the movie Twilight came out featuring vampires known as The Cold Ones. The Twilight books are based on a dream that the author had about young couple. The boy was a vampire and the girl was just a regular girl. The girl’s name is Bella. She leaves her old life with her mom and stepdad, and goes to live with her father. At school she meets some really good looking vampire boys.
The books bring the relationship between The Cold Ones and Bella alive. In the Twilight books the story of The Cold Ones are told as one of the Quileute legends.

Quileute folklore is still very much alive in the area of the Quileute Nation near La Push near the Pacific coast of Washington. Today this area is still very rich in history. In the past the Quileute people fished and hunted salmon, seals, and whales. During the summer and fall months you can go to the Quileute Nation and fish the rivers and ocean for salmon, halibut and tuna. When you visit La Push you will see that the Quileute legends are still a large part of the Quileute Nation.

Today the Quileute Nation is inhabited by many of the very decedents of the original tribe. The Quileute folklore is kept alive with stories such as those about the birth of their tribe through the transforming of a wolf into the first member. If you want to read a good story about The Cold Ones, read the Twilight series. If you want to meet the descendents of a people rich in Quileute folklore, visit the Quileute Nation near La Push, Washington.

Nit picking here. But you have one typo that gave me quite a chuckle:
“Today the Quileute Nation is inhabited by many of the very **decedents** of the original tribe.”

Instead of “decedents,” did you mean “descendants,” or were you referring to the spirit world?
Either way, an interesting idea! ;-)

I live in Portugal and have always been fascinated with American Indians and then when I met the Quileute I was 7 years, now I’m 16 and I understand why my grandmother was talking about them, is a beautiful culture and I look forward to one day visit.

    I love your site

  • Lewis says:

I thought the Quileute Legends were just something Stephenie Meyer made up, and I thought it was really clever. Now that I know that there really are Quileute Legends I think that they are amazing, and Stephenie Meyer was clever to use them (with one addition, ‘The Cold Ones’) in her books. I would love to go and see some people in the Quileute Tribe but there are a few problems: I am only 14, and I live in Herefordshire, England, UK.

  • Diana says:

Hi! very interesting this legend! like all the legends but still, the book made it very popular. I’m curious if they really are wolfs :D

and the vampires… i’m from Romania, believe me: there are a lot of legends here but nothing like The Cold Ones because the vampires ain’t sopouse to be good so….
I hope i’ll meet someday a descendent of Quileute tribe. Who comes with me in Washington? :)

  • Nargis says:

  • Chloe says:

    do they really exist?

  • Shadowrider says:

Chloe we do exsit thats what im trying to say,but no i refuse to change any1 in2 vampires bcause being 1 having pure white skin, sometimes red eyes if not other colours and knowing you have the power to kill some1 with 2 fingers,it all may sound nice but think of it this way vampires live 4 100s of yrs you get lonly hav 2 keep moving all the time 2 places where no1 knows u,its not nice.2 Halfblood i think they have the right cause ppl fear wat they dnt know or understand, think about it we mite nt hav 2 hide if we r nt feared.

  • ve says:

It’s true all of it but we don’t like in the night and the shadows like Dracula of something, and tbh i wouldn’t wish this life apon any body I mean sure I was freak’n petrified of death but having to go through the pain of all your family dying off before you even younger siblings or something not being able to go to their funerals you don’t want this make the most of what you have!

  • Larose says:

Hi, I have to say that I’ve always loved the thought of vamps being real but until I meet one myself I will never fully believe!!! So if there are real vamps out there that would love to have a human friend that can keep you’re secret, don’t look no further I’m here! I do not have too many things that I’m afraid of and vamps are definitely not something that I’m afraid of. No mater how you look or what you can do! The one thing that I would love to do before I die is, find out that legends are really true!

  • ve says:

    Heya and Welcome!!! x

  • Larose says:

Hey, so what’s the deal with you talking as if you’re a real vamp? Is there any way that you can prove it? If you can’t I won’t be surprised and if you can I’m looking forward to see how!

  • ve says:

Hello internet there’s no way I could! (sorry im very sarcastic, xo sorry for sounding mean)

  • Larose says:

Ok well how about this, why don’t you start by telling me your full definition of a real vamp? Tell me exactly what a real vampire is like and what they do. I think that’s fair. I mean if they really exist we deserve to know what we are dealing with. Please don’t leave anything out even if it’s not a pretty picture. Think you can do that?

  • twilightrickster91 says:

Are there really books about the Quileute tribe? Or is it just a fictional name used for The Twilight Saga?

  • ve says:

    It’s a real thing

  • kachu says:

is it real they really exists? i never heard from my grans abt it so iam not sure but seriously want 2 know abt them n their lives

  • adanmzareeb says:

(READ IT IT”S LONG BUT COOL) xDif i knnow u guys in real i would cut ur head and burn u …u don’t go wondering in the internet saying that we r vamps no one knew about vamps since millions of years and no 1 should know so good job by saying every thing ..now all our hard work to keep it a secert was 4 nothing ..and 4 all the ppl that want to be a vamp we can’t turn u cause we only drink animals blood there is a fact that every1 shoould knnow there is good and bad vamps that bad ones drink ppl blood the good ones drink animal bloods so since all of them told u everythiing about vamps im gonna tell u where the GOOD ONES lives …we don’t live in usa maybe there is couple of vamps there but our real home is roma ,italy we move so faast that u can’t even feel that we just passed by u …michel hunter (not the michel hunteer that u kknow if there is some1 called like that and famoouse) he is the only human that knew about us he wanted us to turn him to 1 and then we told him “ur gonna heart ur family” he said if i hearted my family .BURN ME
so as we turned him to one of us he went home cause he missed his family 4 the 1st time he was so close to a human so he couldn’t resist to kill his own family ..so we burned him and never turned anny 1 else to a vamp ..a vampire shoould stay a vampire ..let his son to be a vamp his grandson and the family but NOT to turn a stranger and by that i mean a human to a vamp thats when it comes to vamppires in roma idk about usa but that our rule

  • ve says:

It’s not like they’re samrt enough to track us down so why bother hiding it. I’ve always wanted to be a sire, maybe I’ll try not to burn the person though. I’m sure it’ll be interesting.

I’ve been studying myths and legends for over four years now, and just completed my tour of Africa. I aim to visit America next, to study the Cherokee legends. I’ve come across a variety of strange and wonderful things. I’ve seen magic, even tried it and I’ve heard the most fascinating stories about shapeshifter, skinwalkers and blood drinkers. I met a voodoo priest who could animated the dead with a practice similar to Necromance. I find it all very interesting, and a part of me hopes to someday meet a vampire, or a similar creature, a very old one, who can tell me about the world as it was hundreds of years ago.
I think if I do meet one, it wouldn’t be via the Internet, and I think a vampire will spell better than all of you claiming to be one.
But thank you Medicine Man, I did not enjoy Twilight, and therefore didn’t pay much attention to this legend. I can’t wait to find and read the books you recommend.

All of you who clame to be vamps or actually believe that they really exist or any other legends really need to read up on your greek mythology. Because if you did than you would know that is where all of these legends originally came from. And I don’t think that it’s right that your on the internet claming to be something that you know nothing about. All of these stories came about to explain things that people were afraid of or did not know how to eplain. It’s really just another way for someone to be in control of the masses. Or to scare their kids into listing to them. If you would actually look it up for yourself instead of asking someone who just wants to mess with your head than you would actually know for yourself. I seriously doubt that if they were real that they would be online trying to find out info about what they are. No they would be out and about trying to hide from the rest of the world. And as for the very light skin, red eye color, and haveing to drink blood. Well those are all medical disorders. There are people who have a bleeeding disorders where they crave blood but now that they can do transfusions they don’t drink blood any more unless your just plain weird. And for the skin there is an actual disorder where there are peopl who can’t stand light, if you ever have seen the movie the Others than you would have heard of it. The sun can actually almost kill them. It’s extremly dangerous for them to be out without protection. And for the others who are light skinned with red eyes WELL it’s called being an albino. It amazes me that legends from many years ago have been contrued into something that people think are real. Yes I do belive that somethings are real but as for mythological creatures however are not. I guess for some the idea of immortality or changing shape is a cool idea but you would be wanting something you really know nothing about. Because another legend has it that vamps came from Judis in the bible. They say that he didn’t die that because God cursed him he had to live forever with the guilt of what he did. And I also think that by now there would be so actual proof of these things but there is not. Sorry to burst your bubble but all of it is just folklore and nothing more. And if you don’t belive me well thats your choice but I took a couple of clases in college on greek mythology. And really your spelling is atrocious. For someone who is suppost to be around for hundreds of years doesn’t your computer have spellcheck? Like I said if you don’t know or understand look it up for yourself. And remember just because it makes a good story doesn’t automaticly make it true. The greeks were a great people but there is a reason they are no longer around. I’m not saying that it wouldn’t be cool to be something other than just human but it’s just not real. And yes I have all the Twilight books and have read them and have seen the three movies that have come out. I do think that the books are better than the movies. They just changed too much for my taste.

Am I the only one absolutely disgusted with how SMeyer butchered the Quileute legends? They are a genuine tribe, with a genuine history and their own legends. They don’t need SMeyer turning them all into savage wolfmen who are so much worse than the perfectly white Cullens.
Oh, and, andanmzareeb? FAIL on the whole vampire thing.
    1. Vampires cannot survive on animal blood. It simply does not contain the right nutrients. The very, very few who try? End up as mindless, starving savages whose thought processes are more like “OM NOM NOM EAT DA HUMANS!”. Yeah. It’s horrible.
    2. Red eyes? Ha ha ha, no. Vampires keep their own eye colors, thank you very much. When they are hungry, their pupils dilate massively, making them to appear to have black eyes.
    3. Turning does not involve a simple bite. It is a long, painful procedure involving the transferral of blood from one to another.
    4. Vampires are only slightly faster and stronger than the daonnaí (humans, in lay terms). They used to be daonnaí, after all!
    5. Vamps have their own rich culture and lifestyle. To read people like you pretending to be one is pretty disgusting, actually.
Oh yes, and I am in no way pretending I am a vampire. I am a daonna, same as you guys. Trust me, vamps would never reveal themselves on the internet. :-)
